The 118th Congress is held up due to the chaos surrounding the vote for House Speaker. Kevin McCarthy, who has been desperately seeking the role for years, has done a poor job of securing the votes needed to make him speaker.
It has been a century since the vote has gone past one ballot to elect a speaker. On Tuesday, it went to three ballots, and by the third ballot, Kevin McCarthy actually lost by more votes resulting in 20 votes against him.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are united and have nominated Hakeem Jefferies, who is currently ahead of McCarthy in votes with 212 votes to his 202 votes.
Voting will continue at noon on Wednesday.
